How to Treat Discolored Teeth

By In Cosmetic Dentistry May 24, 2017

We all want a bright and beautiful smile. There are over-the-counter whitening products that, with great discipline, can brighten teeth one or two shades. However, nothing compares to professional whitening products, either in the dentist’s office or with professional take-home trays. At Park Slope Family Dentistry, we provide preventive treatments to ensure healthy smiles, as well as aesthetic options.

In-office Teeth Whitening

With this method, your dentist will apply a professional-strength whitening gel onto your teeth. In the past, sensitivity and erosion issues sometimes arose. However, most professional whiteners today include enamel strengtheners and ingredients to reduce sensitivity.

In-office whitening, also known as chairside bleaching treatment, gives you immediate results that can brighten your smile an average of eight to ten shades.

Professional Whitening Take-Home Trays

If you prefer to whiten at your own pace and in the convenience of your home, take-home professional whitening trays are an excellent choice for you. Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth to create customized trays that fit comfortably over your smile, applying the specially prepared gel onto your teeth. Sometimes, you may be instructed to wear the trays overnight for the best results.

Depending on the time you spend wearing the trays, you can potentially lighten your teeth between three to seven shades.

Porcelain Veneers

For deep, stubborn stains due to teeth that are discolored from tetracycline or other drugs, excessive fluoride, or other causes, veneers can provide the smile you’ve always wanted. In this case your dentist or lab creates precise thin shells of porcelain by taking impressions of your teeth. While more expensive than whitening, veneers are permanent, whereas whitening is not.

Who can Benefit from a Whiter Smile?

Everyone deserves a smile they can be proud of. Having to refrain from laughing at a funny joke or just smiling at a friend takes joy from our lives. Sometimes people wait for a special event, an important meeting, or a job interview to receive treatment. These are excellent times to consider brightening your smile.

If you are ready for the boost of confidence that comes with a beautiful smile, and are in the Brooklyn area, give us a call at Park Slope Family Dentistry.
